Here, the term national publication data sources refers to data sources that include publication data on publications produced by Finnish research organisations. The original source of publication data of Finnish research organisations can be seen as the current research information systems maintained by the organisations themselves. In these, organisations record information about the various research outputs by the researchers from their own organisation. The data published on these dozens of different research organisations are collected together in the VIRTA Publication Information Service, from where the publication data can be utilised by different national systems and services. In itself, the VIRTA Publication Information Service does not provide a user interface for viewing the publication data, but the Research.fi service is available for this purpose. Other information on Finnish research is also collected in the database, such as information on projects, research materials and infrastructures.
