Annual Data Collection of the Ministry of Education and Culture

The purpose of the Ministry of Education and Culture for collecting publication data from higher education institutions, research institutions and university hospitals is to produce a knowledge base on the research activities and the social impact of the Finnish research system. The Ministry uses the publication data collected from higher education institutions not only as a knowledge base for calculating the basic funding allocated to universities and universities of applied sciences, but also for otherwise monitoring research and development activities.

Statistics on the publications are available in the Vipunen statistics service. The information shown in Vipunen is updated once a year.

In addition to science policy and statistical analyses, the data collection serves the purpose of making publication data available for wide-scale utilization. The publication data collected can be viewed in the Juuli publication data portal. The data information shown in Juuli is constantly updating and can in some cases be incomplete.

Use of the publication data in other information services or systems

VIRTA Publication Information Service makes the information of publications within the Finnish research system available for other services or systems via APIs. The data can be accessed via REST or OAI-PMH APIs. This enables the use of information in e.g. research funders' services where the researcher can provide the funder with research publication information when applying for funding. The research information may also be integrated to organizational CRIS-systems to e.g. provide information on research publications created in project work.
