Tausta:
GAIA-X on federoitu data-infrastruktuuri, jonka tavoite parantaa datan hallintaa riippumatta siitä, sijaitseeko data yrityksen omassa tai vieraassa konesalissa. Parhaimmillaan GAIA-X-pilvi voisi helpottaa hajautetun datan luotettavaa jakamista.
Viimeiset neljä vuotta aiheeseen on keskittynyt erityisesti saksalaislähtöinen, yritysten ja tutkimuslaitosten yhteisö, International Data Space Association, IDSA, johon kuuluu myös muutamia suomalaisyrityksiä ja jonka yhtenä keskuksena toimii VTT.
VTT:n alla toimii DIMECC, jonka osakkeenomistaja on myös CSC. "DIMECC is the leading breakthrough-oriented co-creation ecosystem that speeds up time to market. Our innovation platform makes leaders and winners meet. Our network consists of 2.000+ R&D&I professionals, 400+ organizations, 69 shareholders and 10+ co-creation facilitators."
Non-profit belgialainen yritys AISBL on nyt perusteilla; sen tehtävänä on vastata GAIA-X operoinnista jatkossa.
CSC:lle on annettu eurooppalaisen GAIA-X konsortion johdon suunnasta tehtäväksi 9/2020 alkaen johtaa koko GAIA-X:n IAM arkkitehtuurin suunnittelua.
"GAIA-X is a major European initiative for trusted data sharing. It has already strong support from German and French governments and close links to European Commission. More than 300 organizations from various countries are already involved in GAIA-X. Still, the project is open to new European interested parties to join us in its development.
GAIA-X has been seen important for Finland and our data economy business ecosystem. GAIA-X for Finland is a coordination initiative that will help and support participation to GAIA-X. It increases the possibilities to bring in our needs to GAIA-X."

Aikataulu:
- Announcement of GAIA-X in October 2019 by French and German governments
- European Data Strategy in February 2020
- Research funding in Horizon Europe and Digital Europe programmes –investments for convergence
- Meetings with Finnish Industry and GAIA-X representatives during Spring 2020
- 10/2020 VTT pushes forward a preparation project to build a ”GAIA-X for Finland” consortia.
- GAIA-X foundation (ASBL) acquired an official status as a non-profit organisation in Belgium. Legal status is expected to be ready in November 2020. VTT will represent GAIA-X for Finland as a day-one member in this new foundation.
