Provision of Personalized Feedback at Scale using Learning Analytics

The field of learning analytics has emerged as an area to study how the use of data can help increase our understanding of how learning occurs and to improve learning experiences in general. But to achieve a positive impact there needs to be a connection between data and its context. Elements such as the pedagogical design, institutional culture, current practices or ethical and privacy aspects need to be taken into account as well. Initial solutions are proposing the use of visualizations to increase awareness both for instructors and learners. In this talk we propose the use of data-driven personalized feedback as a mean to provide learners with more effective support actions while being able to scale it to large cohorts. The proposed approach explores the combination of data-driven processes with the existing teachers' pedagogical knowledge to provide a large number of learners with personalized support actions.

Abelardo Pardo is Professor and Dean Academic at the Division of Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment at the University of South Australia. His research interests include the design and deployment of technology to increase the understanding and improve digital learning experiences. More specifically, his work examines the areas of learning analytics, personalized active learning, and technology for student support.

He is the author of over 150 research papers in scholarly journals and international conferences in the area of educational technology and engineering education. He is currently member of the executive board and president of the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR).
