Administrator Actions
- Administrator Actions In the university's EXAM installation, BYOD is enabled with the activation setting.
- No additional settings are required for the BYOD.
Instructions for the Administrator
A new feature has been introduced in version 6.3.0 of EXAM, allowing separate permissions to be granted to examiners for adding machine-based exams. The administrator must grant the examiner permission to create machine-based exams in the 'User/User Management' functions of EXAM, so that the examiner can create/add machine-based exams.
In the attached image, adding an exam when the examiner (or administrator) does NOT have the permission to add machine-based exams, the options 'BYOD restricted (beta)' and 'BYOD unrestricted (beta)' appear grayed out and cannot be selected.
Adding the permission to create machine-based exams is done from the User Management view by first locating the respective examiner and then using the '+' icon in the User Rights column to add the 'Can create machine-based exams' permission.

Creating a BYOD Exam
Log in as an examiner to EXAM.
On the examiner's dashboard, click on New Exam and choose the exam type from the dropdown menu.
Once you have selected the exam type, the exam method selection will appear:
Choose BYOD restricted and click Create New.
You can also create a personal exam or a maturity test. The only addition to the instructions is adding the student as a participant, which is done in the publishing settings in the same way as for an exam conducted in the exam room.
Retrieve the course details normally, give the exam a name, and save.
On the Basic Information tab, add any additional information about the exam and save.
Add questions to the exam. NOTE! Safe Exam Browser blocks traffic to all other machine resources, so attachments cannot be added to the exam or questions because students cannot open them!
On the Publishing Settings tab, create self-administered exam sessions:
On the Publishing Settings tab, enter the start and end dates of the exam period and add the exam session (or sessions): provide the date, start time, instructions, maximum number of participants, Exam Session-specific password, and SEB exit password. Click Accept.
It is advisable to mark as the exam period those dates during which the exam sessions are available.
NOTE! The Exam Session-specific password is not visible to students; it is only provided to those students who have enrolled in the exam session once the exam session has started.
The SEB exit password should not be given to students in real exams; instead, it allows the supervising teacher/faculty member to close the SEB browser on a student's computer if there is a technical issue preventing the normal submission or interruption of the exam through EXAM.
Publish the exam. Now students can enroll in the exam session.
Starting an BYOD Session
- The SEB exam is conducted in a shared exam session announced by the teacher and supervised by the teacher (or another individual).
- Students arrive at the session with their own computers, which have SEB installed.
- If needed, installation files for both Windows and Mac computers can be found at https://safeexambrowser.org/download_en.html
- The student starts the exam using the SEB launch file attached to the confirmation email.
- The launch file prompts the student for a password. The teacher/supervisor now provides the students with the password, which was saved when the exam session was created.
- After entering the password provided by the teacher, the student logs into EXAM. The exam starts automatically when the exam session begins.
- The student answers the exam questions normally and submits the exam by clicking the Save and Submit Exam button (or if the student wants to interrupt the exam, they click the Interrupt button) and follows the exit link provided by EXAM. After this, the computer can be used normally.
NOTE! If the student incorrectly terminates the exam session, the SEB exit password defined by the tentaattor is required to release the student's computer.
Deleting an Exam Session
- Go to the Publishing Settings tab of the exam.
- If the checkbox next to the exam session date is red, there are no registrations for the session yet, and you can delete the session by clicking on the checkbox. EXAM will ask 'Are you sure?' Confirm the deletion by clicking 'Yes.'
- If there are already registrations for the session, the checkbox will be grayed out, and the session cannot be deleted anymore.
Editing an Exam Session
- Go to the Publishing Settings tab of the exam.
- Click on the date of the exam session. If there are no registrations for the session yet, you can modify all the session details.
- If there are already registrations for the session, you can only edit the instructions for the exam session.
