An EXAM examination is always attached to a course. Some institutions of higher education have linked their EXAM system and study register. In such case, information about the course (name, code, number of ECTS credits, grading scale) is retrieved directly from the study register.
In an exam, all questions are added to one or several sections. Each section can include one or several questions. Sections are used to group and page an exam. A section can e.g. cover questions about a certain topic or questions of a certain type. The questions included in a section can be randomized, but only if they are equally valued, or a section can be defined as optional.
The following question types can be used in the EXAM system:
- Essay question
- Fill-in exercise
- Multiple Choice Questions (one correct answer)
- Multiple Choice Questions (several correct answers)
- Statement question (can be edited)
A question/assignment is text and no more than one possible attachment. The attachment can be an image file, a PDF file, or any other file that can be opened with the programs and tools available on the EXAM computer (different institutions have a different set of programs and tools on their EXAM computers). Simple formatting can be used in the assignment.
All questions created for an exam are automatically saved in the question library. Thus, they can also be used in other exams (see Question library).
An alternative is to create questions without attaching them to a certain exam using the Create new question button. This creates the questions directly into the question library and they can be added to exams from there. If a question added from the question library is edited once it is attached to an exam, the editions will take effect in all exams the question has been attached to (see Adding and editing questions).
The questions in students’ study attainments are protected from post-editing: copies of the questions are created at the beginning of an exam attempt. In other words, if a teacher edits a question after a student has taken the exam, the edits do not take effect in the exam of that student. The edits take effect in all later exam attempts.
The questions and exams can be copied as new versions. Any edits made in a copy do not change the original question/exam.
The teacher can edit the exam as they wish as the exam will first be available for the students once it is published with the Save and publish button.
A teacher can add another teacher as an examiner, giving them full rights to the exam. Another teacher can also be added as an evaluator who can assess exam attempts but not define the study attainments or lock the assessment, as these functions are only available for the examiner.
A student can attach one file to their answer. Check the available programs and tools with your institution as the set of programs and tools on the EXAM computers in some institutions is more limited than in others.
The teacher will be notified about submissions by students to exams by a weekly email message. An exam is assessed in the EXAM system and, in those institutions where the study register and EXAM system are linked, the assessment is registered in the institution’s study register.
