About

NOCOS DT is a digital twin project focusing on sea ice in the Arctic, Nordic and Baltic regions. It ties to Destination Earth, a project ultimately aiming at creating a digital model of the whole world, and especially to its Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin. The project aims to explore and pilot the digital twin technology and showcase how it could be leveraged for key sea-ice impact sectors in the Arctic, Nordic and Baltic context.

NOCOS DT is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The consortium brings together CSC – IT Center for Science (CSC), Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MetNo), Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), and Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech).

Panel at EXPO 2025 Osaka "Advancing Polar Research: From Field Data to Global Insights"

NOCOS DT will participate in EXPO 2025 Osaka, held under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” The event will bring together more than 150 countries and organizations.

As part of the Joint Nordic Events at EXPO 2025, the flagship event Arctic Day will take place at the Nordic Pavilion on 11 October 2025. Arctic Day brings together leaders and experts to shape solutions in a time of transformation.

NOCOS DT’s project leader Tero Aalto will take part in a panel discussion titled “Advancing Polar Research: From Field Data to Global Insights”, representing the project. The panel will focus on the multi- and interdisciplinary research and strong international collaborations, which are needed to find effective responses to the ongoing climate change. This is true especially in the High Arctic, where field observations are scarce logistically challenging and costly but indispensable in understanding the ongoing climate change and its consequences.

NOCOS DT & Terra DT joint workshop "Digital Twin Solutions for Sea Ice" on 27–28 October 2025

TerraDT and Nordic Cryosphere Digital Twin (NOCOS DT), two leading initiatives at the forefront of digital twin development for the cryosphere, are joining forces in a joint interactive workshop to explore how digital twin technologies are advancing our understanding of sea ice dynamics in the Arctic, Baltic, and beyond.

The two-day event hosted by Tallinn University of Technology (and online) combines NOCOS DT's final event, showcasing the six sea ice research solutions produced in the project, with TerraDT's first sea ice impact sector workshop.

The event provides opportunities for participants to:

  • Gain a comprehensive view of the current state of the art and future potential of Earth System Digital Twins for sea ice research, from regional applications in the Baltic and Arctic to global-scale Earth system modeling.
  • Engage with researchers, developers, and decision-makers to share lessons learned and best practices in digital twin technology.
  • Learn about new tools developed to address cryospheric challenges.
  • Discuss user needs, technical integration, and opportunities for collaboration across the digital twin ecosystem.
