Muistiinpanot

  1. PID Network Deutschland esittelee toimintaansa & keskustelua tavoitteista
    1. Presentation: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10213068
    2. Zenodo Community of the PID-Network DE Project is available at https://zenodo.org/communities/pid-network-de
    3. PID Network Deutchland presented the work done in Germany with PID's. They focus on PID's for research. Funded by DFG.
    4. Scope of the project
      1. not creating a new PID system in Germany
      2. connecting the different actors working on techincal solutions
      3. recognizing existing needs
      4. Network of existing actors within this landscape

        Why apply for this project?

Recognised as a fundamental principal to use PIDs

Code of conduct for safeguarding good research practices

        https://www.pid-network.de/en/

    5. The PID landscape in Germany

      1. Five DataCite consortia in Germany

ORCID Germany has more than 18 member

Project phase date back to 2016

        Two-phased projects 2016-2019 and 2020-2022

The PID landscape is very heterogeneous in Germany

Ten PID use cases: PIDs for research data, scientific conferences, persons, physical objects, software, etc.

Community building, e.g. RDA group on PIDs

Conducting a qualitative and quantitative survey on PIDs

ORCID DE Monitor is a dashboard available since June 2021

        ORCID DE Monitor: https://monitor.orcid-de.org/

Development of PID Roadmap for Germany. A participatory effort, working e.g. on PID Policy of EOSC, PID Roadmap of Research Council (NWO) from the Netherlands, etc.

Five partner organisations involved in the PID Network Germany, it is a project

Focus is on connecting the different actors who are already working on technical solutions, will not build own technical solutions, but will focus on the needs in order to be able to optimise the workflows - connecting people so that they can connect

Research information as one use case, the goal is to have several PIDs connected to the research information

Raising awareness and lobbying for PIDs through the PID Policy work

    6. You mentioned that the network is conducting a qualitative and quantitative survey on PIDs. Is this a work still in progress or can you already share some of the results? Is it meant for PID users, service providers, authorities etc., or?
      1. We’re in the course of setting it up. The quantitative survey will be launched beginning of next year and the results be published in May. The structure of the survey will be similar to that one we conducted about organizational identifiers: https://doi.org/10.5334/dsj-2022-019

but broadening the scope to many other PIDs

The survey is aiming at research institutions and universities in Germany. Points of contact at these institutions are preferable open science people.

    7. Discussion about research grants and projects and their PIDs
      1. Finland aims to introduce PIDs for research projects to connect information to projects, but have difficulty in how could new PIDs be implemented to funder processes
      2. One of the use cases of Deutchland is related to research institutions and includes projects that also have similar goals
    8. Metadata for PID or PID as a part of metadata?
      1. At DataCite they try to define the term metadata - complete metadata - is metadata ever complete and how much PID-information does it need?

  2. Presenting the new national PID policy work (Kansallisen pysyvien tunnisteiden työryhmän) Jyrki Ilva
    1. Presentation
    2. Authority to define how things should be vs how they have to be
      1. Finland is more centralized and the government could have the mandate to implement
      2. however the roadmap & policy will not be official documents but as they will be worked with stakeholders, we hope that they want to be implemented across sectors
    3. About the use of RORs and organisational identifiers
      1. organisantions have multiple different identifiers in different contexts
      2. wikidata has helped in comprehensing and connecting all id'd
      3. RORs are not accurate enough  for publication use in Finland as they go in deeper the organization level (faculties, departments etc)
  3. Continuing cooperation
    1. PIDapalooza subsitute PIDfest as the next meeting
    2. check up meeting around year from now to see the progress of
    3. It sounds like a huge orchestration with all of the different PID use cases that you Antonia mentioned. How is this coordinated and arranged? In the FAIR-IMPACT project we are also working with eight use case partners on PIDs, providing documentation on best practices implementation and usage of PIDs (https://fair-impact.eu/), mainly for end users.
  4. News about PIDs
    1. New developments regarding European URN services - Ulriika Vihervalli
      1. Presentation:
      2. URN:NBN-users have not communicated with each other. using URNs has been fairly independent, but National Library wants to change this and bring in collaboration to work
        1. what is going well, are there challenges, are there local solutions to common challenges
        2. finding ways to collaborate outside project funding to create a stable format of collaboration
        3. brining in new URN-users from outside of Europe
      3. having a discussion about URNs and their qualities would be useful
        1. URNs are not always seen as actual PID, for example ORCID does not recognize URN
          1. could we bring this to discussion with ORCID
          2. could we implement different name spaces
            1. on of the arguments is that URN is resolvable on national level (namespace) but not internationally
              1. we need to work on creating reliable services for resolving URNs
        2. sometimes assigning also DOI is possible while still keeping URN
      4. implementing PIDs with serach enginges? do we really need to resolving PIDs or could entering PID in search engine and landing on the landing page be enough?
    2. New developments in EOSC - FAIRCORE4EOSC PID services - Tommi Suominen
      1. Presentation
