Publish or Perish (PoP) is a free software that allows users to search for and analyse citation data from several different data sources. The first version of the programme released in 2006 in 2006 was mainly intended for analysing Google Scholar (GS) materialsScholar materials. Today, in addition to GS Google Scholar materials, the programme can be used to analyse citation data from Crossref, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science (WoS). Open databases are also added to the service as new operators emerge in the field. However, it should be taken into account that some of the materials require a licence acquired by your organisation. The software was developed and is maintained by Professor Anne-Wil Harzing. Using the programme requires installing on your device, programme versions are available for Windows, Linux and macOS. The programme can be downloaded at Harzing.com

In PoP, a search is started by selecting the desired source material: GSGoogle Scholar, Crossref, PubMed, Scopus or WoS. Some of these materials will require a licence acquired by the organisation and a ‘search key’. The search can also be targeted at the personal profiles in GSGoogle Scholar. Users can carry out searches based on a person’s name, publication’s title, words used in the title, key words or an ISSN identifier. The search can also be limited to certain years. When using the filter for certain years, it should be taken into account that many records indexed in GS Google Scholar have deficiencies regarding publication dates, and using the filter may prevent the programme from finding every publication of a certain person, for example. The search results received can be sorted by number of citations, author, title of publication, year of publication or the publisher. The programme automatically shows the publication and citation statistics for the selected results.

  • The functionalities and search functions of this tool are fairly limited to compared to competing analysis tools.
  • It does not offer the option to produce field-normalised indicators.
  • It is not possible to define the citation window or remove self-citations.
  • The reliability of PoP results depends on the accuracy of the citation data of the source materials used.
  • Regarding GS Google Scholar materials, in particular, it should be noted that the citation numbers are significantly higher than in WoS or Scopus. Non-scientific citations are overrepresented in the citations, and separating these from the scientific citations is impossible.
  • GS Google Scholar limits its search results to one thousand references, which is why a PoP search result from GS Google Scholar materials also provides a maximum of one thousand references with one search. Additionally, GS Google Scholar limits the use of material if a user performs a high number of searches in a short amount of time.
